  • Department Profile

    The Department of Botany was established along with Zoology as Department of Biology in 1968. The B.Sc. course in Botany was started in 1982, which is flourished under the headship of (late) Prof. P. V. James, who retired in 1995. From 1995 to 2000 Prof. M. K. Narendranath led the Department, and then, Prof. A. Abdul Ayub, served as the Head, for a long period of 16 years. He served the department for a total of 31 years. Dr.M.M.Shajivas served the department for 30 years and Dr. M. Kamarudeen Kunju, for 11 years. Dr. P. Nusaifa Beevi served as the Head of the department from 2016 to 2022. Dr. Viji A R is the present Head of the department. The department also offers Post Graduate course in Botany with biotechnology as elective paper,from 2013 onwards.

    The results have been excellent and department has produced many toppers in degree level examinations as early from 1998 onwards. Majority of the students opt for higher studies in Botany.
    The Department is stepped into active research in 2008 onwards taking up research projects from various funding agencies. The faculty members of the Department have successfully completed four research projects so far funded by UGC. The Department has already conducted four national seminars, and one national workshop. The Department has put up a full-fledged research laboratory in Plant biotechnology and Tissue culture, with the financial support from UGC and the Management. It provides facilities for PG and UG students for doing their project works. Preparations are going on for the submission of a Major Research Project and also for the up gradation of it into a research Department.

    Faculty members were given class/semester charges to keep discipline. PTA meetings were conducted regularly to discuss and suggest remedial measures for the overall development of the students. As part of extension activities department encourages students to work towards environment awareness and protection. The Department is regularly arranging invited lectures and community level awareness programmes for motivating the students. The department also started the initial work for the construction of a National Medicinal plant demo garden with the support from National Medicinal Plant Board, and Peringammala Grama Panchayath.

    Students of the department are always encouraged to participate in science seminars and conferences. The students are regularly participating in inter-collegiate Quiz competitions and Debates organized by various colleges. Regular field trips to Western Ghatsand Institutions are conducted for on field experience.
