The Department of History was started in the academic year 1979-80 with History as main subject in undergraduate level. Its complementary papers are Political Science and Economics. Within the 35 years of academic profile, about 3,000 pupils were successfully completed their Bachelors Degree in this discipline. Most of them have good record of academic excellence and proved their capabilities in various walks of life. There are a few colleges offering History at UG level in and around Nedumangad Taluk. As a catering institution of the marginalized, number of applicants for UG admission is more than thrice from the actual intake capacity. Considering this high demand, the enrolling number is enhanced up to 55. In 2016-17 it has reached to 65. The Department has already conducted one national seminar and two graduate seminars.
After 20 years of fruitful services, Post graduate course in History was started in 1999 with an intake capacity of 16 students every year. The performance of the college is at par with top-notch colleges in Kerala, and produced Rank holders and First Class winners in the University of Kerala from the very inception itself. In 2016-17 there are five permanent teachers and two posts are vacant. Two teachers have qualified Ph.D and pursuing research activities. One faculty member has become the recognized Research Guide of Kerala University. Another faculty member has applied for research guideship. The remaining teachers are doing Ph.D and also engaging with research oriented works. Minor Research Projects funded by UGC have been taken up by the faculty members and three of them were successfully completed and submitted to the UGC. The Dept. is also striving for making it a Research Department.
The department meetings are conducted every month to evaluate the academic quality of our students and motivating programmes are frequently organised for the students. The department conducts periodic test papers for every class covering each module. The P.T.A meeting is regularly conducted to provide a platform to discuss about the academic performance and other activities of the student. The students are also given counseling to solve their academic and personal problems. The department hears the grievance and complaints from our students and the tutorial system is functioning effectively.
The department gives special focus on improving the quality of education, by conducting many lecture programmes, seminars and symposia for the benefit of our students. We have constituted the Alumni Association named HAAI and it conducts meetings. Coaching classes for NET examinations are also conducted for P.G. students. We also prepare students for competitive examinations. The department conducts enrichment programmes to help the poor and slow learners and failed students of the department. The department is frequently organising special lectures of eminent historians on relevant topics especially for P.G students.
