DEPARTMENT OF HISTORY PROFILE
The Department of History was established in the academic year 1979–80 with History as the core subject at the undergraduate level, along with Political Science and Economics as complementary subjects. The postgraduate programme was introduced in 1999, and in 2021, the Department was elevated to the status of a Research Centre under the University of Kerala. The Department implemented the Four–Year Undergraduate Programme (FYUGP) in 2024.
At present, the Department has seven permanent faculty members, all of whom are recognised Research Guides under the University of Kerala and have successfully guided several Ph.D. scholars. Faculty members have undertaken and completed Minor Research Projects funded by the UGC. A large proportion of our students come from economically and socially backward families, and the majority are female. The Department has continuously taken initiatives to reduce dropout rates and ensure academic support for all learners.
The Department regularly organizes academic and co-curricular activities for the benefit of students. Several seminars, community-linked programmes, outreach activities and health awareness programmes, including eye camps, have been conducted over the years. The Department has an excellent track record of academic achievement with more than 4500 graduates, many of whom are employed in reputed Government and private institutions. Notable alumni include Shri. Prasanthan Kani, IPS. The Alumni Association of the Department, titled “HAAI”, functions actively and holds meetings regularly.
Coaching classes for UGC-NET examinations are also conducted for postgraduate students. In 2025, a UGC-NET Coaching Centre was inaugurated in the College under the initiative of a faculty member of the Department of History, with financial support from the Minority Welfare Department, Government of Kerala.
Department meetings are held every month to evaluate academic progress and to plan improvement strategies. Motivational and personality development programmes are conducted frequently. Periodic test papers are administered for all classes based on the modules completed. PTA meetings are conducted regularly to review the academic performance of students. Counselling support is provided for academic as well as personal issues. The Department follows an effective tutorial system and ensures timely redressal of student grievances.
