DEPARTMENT OF MATHEMATICS – PROFILE
The Department of Mathematics was established in 1964, the year of inception of the College, as an affiliated institution under the University of Kerala. Initially, the Department functioned with a single faculty member handling Pre-degree courses.
In 1980, the Department was elevated to the level of an Undergraduate Department with an intake of 32 students. Since then, it has been striving to become a centre of excellence in Mathematical Sciences and Applications, particularly benefiting students from the socially and economically backward communities of Peringammala region. The Department consistently supports and promotes the acquisition of mathematical skills, talent development, and academic training among its students. To date, the Department has produced more than 1000 B.Sc. graduates in Mathematics. It continues to work towards fostering talent, promoting innovation and enhancing academic standards in higher education.
The Department initially housed a library with over 2000 books. At present, it is integrated with the General Library of the College, providing access to a wider collection of books and reputed mathematical journals. Conducting seminars, conferences, workshops and related academic activities in association with the Students’ Association has been a regular feature of the Department. Over the decades, the Department has reached significant milestones and has risen to its current status as a multifaceted academic wing, supporting students of various science disciplines with rigorous mathematical training. The Department has consistently achieved excellent academic results, securing more than 95% pass percentage in most years.
Presently, the Department offers B.Sc. Mathematics with Statistics and Physics as complementary courses, and Operations Research as an Open Course. The Department regularly organises seminars, exhibitions, quiz competitions and other academic enrichment programmes in Mathematics and allied subjects. The Department also proposes to publish a student-led Mathematical Journal during this academic year. This endeavour is expected to continue in the coming years, inspiring future batches of students to participate in academic activities with greater motivation and enthusiasm.Hundreds of alumni of the Department are currently employed in various Government sectors, and many of them are working abroad as well.
